Assessment of swallowing disorders forms the basis for developing management strategies. Different assessments provide different kinds of information. Rarely does one form of assessment provide complete diagnostic information. The BSE services as a tool for identifying clinical presentation of dysphagia, determine the need for an instrumental evaluation, and for specifying diagnostic questions to be answered by instrumental evaluations. A BSE is usually the first step in a complete assessment.
