Lifestyle Modifications for Patients with GERD/REFLUX
- Eat in a relaxed stetting
- Eat several small meals throughout the day instead of 3 large meals
- Try alternating solids and liquids
- When taking medications or supplements, take one at a time
- Always include lean meats, and low-fat items in your diet
- Avoid:
- Caffeine
- Mints
- Alcohol
- Chocolate or cocoa
- Chili powder and other spices
- Cured and spiced meats like sausage and hot dogs
- Pepper
- Citrus juice (orange, lemon, and tomatoes)
- Pickled items
- Do not eat right before you lay down to rest, go to sleep or recline in a chair. Allow 30 to 45 minutes to pass in an upright position before laying down or reclining.
- Elevate the head of the bed 6 inches. This is best done with blocks under the legs of the bed, as it is not as effective to add extra pillows at the neck.
- Avoid laying on the right side.
Other contributing factors
